Introduction to Color & 2D Design

Visual foundations for artists, makers, and meaning-builders.

This hands-on course explores the fundamentals of two-dimensional design and color theory through a wide range of analog processes. Students gain fluency in the building blocks of visual language—line, shape, rhythm, pattern, hierarchy, contrast, and unity—while working in black-and-white and full color.

Projects include collage, paper architecture, hand lettering, printmaking, pattern design, book structures, and basic stop-motion animation. Each assignment introduces new tools and concepts while encouraging creative risk, thoughtful reflection, and personal voice.

No prior experience is required—just curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to work by hand.

Participants leave with:
  • A working knowledge of design principles
  • A strong foundation in color theory and its emotional impact
  • A personal portfolio of physical and digital work
  • A deeper understanding of how visual choices communicate meaning
This course is ideal for emerging artists, educators, and anyone building a more intentional visual practice.
